So the difference is that one king, even though he messed up bad, became resilient by acknowledging his pride of sin and by acknowledging God while giving God His place of respect, glory and honor (Dan 4:1-3, 34-37); Whereas the son of the king who succeeded the throne was never seen repenting for pride or mentioning God by giving God glory and honor. The reverential fear was deeply lacking yet both kings were judged for their pride problem, both were sentenced, but unlike king Nebuchadnezzar who showed repentance, his son did not and after being exposed, died that night (5:30). Daniel did not yoke with this unrepentive person (5:17) even though it was inevitable that the wealth of the wicked be laid up for the just (5:29). Daniel's gift of interpretation had made room for him and brought him before the king (Pro 18:16), but unlike good news, Daniel was sent to expose king Belshazzar because, "You have not humbled your heart... and you have lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven (5:22-23).
Another difference between the two kings is... Nebby received a word from God that came from the inside out- a dream. Belshazzar received a word from God that came from the outside- in the form of the writing on the wall. Bel was so prideful, that this lack of repentance, humility, fear of God, lack of showing any respect for God, had left no room in his inner man to hear God, and we know that God knows the proud from afar (Ps 138:6) but gives grace to the humble (1 Pt 5:5)... Bel's pride killed him while he swallowed hand over fist the idolatrous golden image his dad made previously but his dad learned quickly that God is God, not images of money, silver/gold, power positions, or idol images, and yet here is Daniel standing full of the Holy Spirit, spiritually aware of which promotion to accept and which promotion to verbally reject, knowing which candidate to receive from based on their walk with God.
