Compassion In The Grave
Blue v22-31 Ch 16 Luke
Amazing how the guy in Hades was not only being in torments (v23) but had addressed Abraham as father (v24, 30). Abraham also had died yet the guy could see Abraham across this great gulf that was fixed in-between them, though no one could cross over onto the other side (v26). Abraham addressed the tormented man, saying, 'Son...' (v25). Abraham is the father of many nations (Gen 17:4-5). Interesting how in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but of wood and clay too, some for honor and some for dishonor (2 Tim 2:20). The tormented guy wasn't carried into Abraham's bosom by angels like the begger Lazarus had been carried (v22-24). Interesting how now, after the man is dead, he finds time to care about his family not going to hell (v27) so begins to beg Father Abraham to send the beggar Lazarus to come dip his finger in water to relieve his never ending pain but it's too late. The guy shares how he has 5 brothers (v28) and that he didn't want them to come where he was since it's tormenting but Abraham responded (v29), "They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them." {The law is for sinners (1 Tim 1:9).} The guy rejected this so wanted Abraham to send the beggar Lazarus (dead also but on Ab's side) to his 5 brothers because if someone who had been raised from the dead showed up he believed his family would listen but Abraham rejected this... if they can't believe the law (mammon, law pertaining to fleshly commands, the tutor that leads you to Christ), then they won't be persuaded through the true riches of a spiritual miracle (v31)! The lesson is... Compassion practiced pre-grave, not post-grave becomes effective.
