See, you thought he was alive and out having fun while he was living in sexual immorality (harlots) and wasting all of his money (chasing cars, parties, expensive food & clothes, a nice house), yet you stayed and continued to do all the work, doing whatever I asked of you, but your brother was dead and not alive after he requested his early inheritance so that he could go out on his own and party whenever he felt like it, do whatever he felt like doing. He found out how that wasn't the real party. The fattened calf has been killed and the real party is only beginning because my son has come home to me and is safe and sound, and although you have been a good and obedient older son, don't get jealous, all that I have has been yours the entire time while your younger brother lost place, humilated even to the point of feeding and cleaning up after someone else's pigs when finally, he came to himself, realizing the error of so many of his choices and so he returned home to become only my servant yet when I seen him coming he was still a far distance away but my heart knew instantly that this is my son, and he's coming home... And that's why I put the best robe on him, because he is changing his lifestyle from death to life again, and that's why I put sandals on his feet, because he finally found his way home and to be at peace, and that's why I put a ring on his finger, because in the new covenant he is made alive again (v24, 32). It is not because you are not being celebrated, only that you never took your robe off... so don't be jealous when your brother finally awakens from his stupor and is home for eternal life.
