Jonah knew God was gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abundantly kind, One Who relents from doing harm (Jon 4:2)... and that's why he didn't want to go tell those Ninevite people who were doing all those wicked things (Jon 1:2) that some bad stuff was going to happen because their sins had now reached heaven and God wanted to release judgment against that, although Jonah prophetically knew that once these people repented, his Word from the LORD would make him look like a false prophet so why even bother saying anything at all! Yet after Jonah rebelled (Jon 1:4-9), then got whipped into shape to where the Word of the LORD came to him the 2nd time (Jon 3:1), Jonah had no problem obeying but he did point out to the LORD {after the people fasted and prayed (Jon 3:5,7-8), having sincerely repented to God Who did take notice of their works (Jon 3:10), even to the point where God decided to relent (v10)}, Jonah did complain that this was why he didn't want to go in the first place, because he knew this would happen (Jon 4:1-2). It made him mad! Why give a prophetic word if the Word doesn't even get to come to pass!
Because prophetic words are still "knowledge" and knowledge will vanish away, just as whether there are prophecies, they will fail (1 Cor 13:8). Mercy is not filed under knowledge it is filed under love, and Love never fails... so being prophetic has its drawbacks but also, have you ever wondered what God meant when He said the "weakness of God is stronger than men" (1 Cor 1:25)? When even part of His own Spirit is called the Spirit of Knowledge (Isa 11:2/1 Cor 12:8)... What is God's weakness...//?
The Power of God is not as Powerful as the Character of God~ All the more reason why we should greatly love the Mercy Seat in Reverential Fear~
