Blue v35-45 Ch 10 Markv41 And when the ten heard it...
~I can't believe you said that!?
Well... great that John can revelate and be the one that Jesus loves, and great that James is John's brother (1:19) and gets his fair share of divine input in the Word of God, but (v40) to sit on Jesus' right hand and on His left?
v41 ...they began to be greatly displeased with James and John.
Talk about healthy self esteem... you can tell they grew up with their biological father. This is something that is amazing because i never considered myself good enough to sit that close to Jesus and many times while reading this passage had thought how secure these guys were that they could even ask Jesus for such a high position of honor. I've never seen myself as being able to make Jesus look good and believed that if you sit that close then you should be able to do that since He is so honorable, but then after seeing that these guys grew up with their biological father, they had a healthy self-esteem and knew what it felt like to be loved and accepted, to matter to somebody who is really important so probably didn't think anything about asking Jesus if they could sit next to Him in glory (v37).
Although, the motive wasn't entirely pure because Jesus (v42-45) proceeds to correct them over position verses serving people, even using Himself as an example about how to serve when in a powerful position of authority. Basically, if you want to be great and powerful, then yield to interruption; listen to what someone else has to say; let them pick the music on the drive home; let the restaurant choice be there's without fighting about it or blaming them for always getting to do what they want to do; help to get someone else's program started; let them sing that song with passion from the heart while encouragiing their flow instead of assuming it's just for self-glory or simple entertainment; actively listen to what conversation your neighbor is trying to have with you without looking around the room for the next person whom you'd like to be spending your time with because that person will make you look better; hear what revelation they were given and now want to share with you; don't get secretly jealous when another person gets to teach a class, rather rejoice and be glad that God's Kingdom is being expanded; be at peace with altar ministry and help to promote God's Spirit when He wants to flow through someone's hands other than your own... let them flow in the gifts even when you can do it and probably better, let them be the one to lay hands on the sick even though you both have the same gift, let them share the revelation even though you already know it, just receive it with joy all over again... yield. For this routes fighting for territory and promotes an open heart with real love, plus it is another way to be involved with the greatness of service in your life so that while knowing indeed you are great, you don't have the need to be great, because God's Love in you is happy to see His Greatness coming out from somebody else.
