Surprise

 Blue  v14-29  Ch 6  Mark

Amazing how much damage this one law-breaker caused all because of hating the light for exposing the sin.

King Herod had married his brother Philip's wife but after John the Baptist exposed it to Herodias, that this was not lawful (v17), she hated John for it (v19) so held a grudge until an opportune time when she could use her position of influence to destroy John's life; resorting even to using her own daughter as she flowed in hate just to have John's head cut off (v21-24).  The depth of her hate is beyond sick in that she wanted his head served on a platter (v25).  You know the bible says not to use more faith than you really have and honestly, i don't have faith for people like her to skip out on hell.  How can she disrespect a man of God so blatantly for a crime he didn't do, only that he exposed her sin and she hated his guts for it, seeking a way to punish him through deep hatred.  My belief is that if you can hate so deeply then you are not of the light anyway.  People of light, even when we get exposed for sin, may not like it but we do know we must repent and then do something different than what we were doing before.  This woman didn't even seem to know or care that her own husband actually liked John the Baptist, feared him, knowing John to be a just and holy man (v20).  The king was sorry (v26) about it because he made an oath to give up to half his kingdom to his wife's daughter who had danced and pleased him (v22-23), but he wasn't sorry enough nor strong enough to stand up for what was really right inspite of the fact that he knew John wasn't guilty of anything.

On the surface value it looks as if the darkness won.  Like it got away with something.  But John didn't have to punish the enemy and neither do we because Jesus has an appointment with all of that, and he spanks better than we do .  It's a little satisfying without rejoicing over iniquity... just rejoicing over Truth!  There is still comfort in knowing that evil is still punishable by law and righteousness in Christ will never be put to shame~
