v26 Jeroboam rebelled against the king...his mother was
        a widow named Zeruah.
v28 When Solomon saw how well Jeroboam did his work
        he put him in charge of the whole labor force.

Remember now that the LORD already told Solomon in v11 that He would give the kingdom to one of his subordinates because he didn't follow whole heartedly, but that He would not do it during his lifetime for the sake of his father David, so instead it would be Solomon's son who would experience the kingdom being torn out of his hand (v12).

Speaking to the Future: Solomon's sin will affect a generation yet to come. Speaking to the Past: David's righteousness will affect a generation that now is. Both Past & Future are speaking into Today... v41 all he did and the wisdom he displayed - are they not written...
