New Madrid is a city in Missouri. The city was destroyed by the 8 magnitude quake of the 1800's. The New Madrid Seismic Zone affects 7 regions: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky. The fault line stretches southward from Cairo, Illinois through Hayti, Missouri..... and so on.
~geological changes occured along the Mississippi River giving illusion that it was flowing backward while the quakes were felt as far away as New York & Boston. For 5 to 6 years after, the aftershocks were still strong enough to be felt. On-site where now is Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Union City, Tennessee, 19th century citizens would gather every Feb 7th for an all night "vigil and fish fry" praying, singing, and asking the Almighty to 'spare the land over" for another year. This continued on until sometime after the American Civil War.
