David is a Servant-Leader : v2 "I myself will surely march out with you"
David walks and is practicing the character of Christ (servant-leadership) but then additional wisdom shows up and overrides the level of knowledge he is living up to which will continue to promote peace and unity. The men knew that even if 1/2 of them died in battle that David was "worth ten thousand of us" so recommended he set aside the normal good practice of going out to war with them to just give them city support instead (v3-4).
In Battle: If you get the leader, you got the followers~
Ahithophel's advice was exactly this (14:3). It was this advice that was not followed and that he hung himself over. Ahithophel was right. He hung himself for no good reason. Your responsibility is to operate in your gifting, how the receiver responds is not your responsibility; it's ok to appear to man like you are producing no fruit when in fact it was God Who made his gifting appear and produce the way it did and it had little to do with being right or wrong but everything to do with what God wanted according to His Will. Humility is the best thing we can do when it appears we've lost our place because it's not true, there was nothing wrong with Ahithophel's advice or gift. He just needed a little more humility in that perfectionist melancholy side of the personality.
Once Father God sets a plan for our life it really doesn't matter what anyone does or thinks about it in the long run, whether being for us or against us. Father chooses us according to His Will and His Wisdom is confident as to why.
