v16 David pleaded with God for the child.v16 He fasted & spent a few nights lying on the
ground emotionally miserable.
v17 The elders of David's household felt sorry
for him; tried to encourage him to get up
and eat something but David refused.
v18 On the 7th day the child died.
We don't always know who knows what, who sees what, when ministering one to another. We see in part; prophesy in part (1 Cor 13:9); help only in part.
The household encouragers didn't know what David knew per Word of the LORD sent and spoken through Nathan the prophet that had told David that the child Bathsheba carried would die because the adultery and murder he committed with her made the enemies of the LORD show utter contempt (v14). David was miserable because it was his sin that caused this mess and he knew it but was truly repentive over his sin so tried his hardest to do the right thing even though the consequence had to complete it's cycle. Humility now led David, revealing through his character that he had changed.
After the child died the household encouragers were afraid to tell David, assuming he'd do something desperate (v18). They didn't understand yet why David stopped mourning once (v21) the child died? 
The Spirit of God lets us know what part we need to know so we can live up to the knowledge we know and just be that part in the moment we are to yield to the part He wanted us to participate in so that everything is a natural flow and can come right out of the heart. Had the household encouragers known what Nathan had declared concerning the death of the child they would not have been able to act the way they did and would have acted totally different. God is working out the stories and His Spirit will let us know whatever we need to know to just "Be" and give our part at the right time. What we have to give in that moment is exactly what we were supposed to be giving away. If we need to know more, we'll get to know that too when the Spirit decides, and it too will be building on another great story on how the LORD operates, upholds, interacts, and let's us participate in this huge relationship with Him and people.
