Commander Abner had sex with Rizpah (v7) and Saul's son Ish-Bosheth is mad and is accusing Abner of it because she was one of his dad's concubines (v8,7).
This was Abner's choice to walk out of one camp and into another. Sin separates, (Eph 5:5) fornication was being confronted and exposed on the one hand so that sin could be brought out into the light, but also, it was used on another hand by God to help fulfill some prophecy-promise made to David who was to be the Ruler of Israel and since Abner was the General Chief of Staff and Decorated War General, Abner could help hand Israel over to David (v12). What happened in the meantime is God was preparing the hearts of the people to want to receive David as their Ruler so making transition would actually be easier.
(v17-18) Abner used his position to confer with the elders of Israel and said, "For some time you have wanted to make David (Jesus) your King. Now do it!
