v1-25 Ziklag had been burned to the ground. The Amalekites stole all the stuff before burning down the town given to David by king Achish. The Amalekite army even took the wives and family members captive as trophies.
The guys wept until they couldn't weep no more (v4). After processing hurt you get mad. David's men were very bitter in spirit (v6) and needed someone to blame. Justice had not been served so anger wanted to punish someone right away. The men talked about stoning David since he's the leader and it was his fault that no one was at home when this happened, having to suck up to king Achish, causing them to march in their army to fight their battles (29:2), even a battle that would have set them up against their own countrymen...
Immediately David turns to God to find out what to do (v7), learning that God intended victory over the raiding party that stole all their stuff (v8). The theif was found and war broke out over who gets to keep the stuff? David and 400 of his men won the war. Winning back all their stuff- nothing was missing (v19). They were reunited with their families.
