David was whole-hearted in his choice to serve king Achish and was ready to go fight with the Philistines against Israel, David's native homeland (28:1-2).

Wherever David was planted, he would give his whole-heart into what he was doing and because he feared the LORD, served and loved the LORD, the LORD protected David when David couldn't or didn't know how to protect himself.

The king approved of David but the other rulers didn't (v6), being angry by David's presence since it was battle time and the Philistine commanders we're going to go fight against Saul and his army and thought David would use this opportunity to get back into a good standing with Saul so would turn on them since already they knew of David's successful military background (v4-5).

In God's plan, God had scheduled for David to become the next Israeli King, so this would not have been a wise move for David to go fight and kill the people God appointed him to rule over in the future.  The people would not be able to trust David knowing this so God protected David from this huge mistake (v8-11) even though David had no idea at the time that God was protecting him.  David was doing what he was supposed to be doing- living life with his whole heart (v8).  God then directed David's steps (Pro 16:9).  David could rest in knowing that God is leading him into fulfilling the plan of God on his life.
