~ You Are Never Worthless ~
v39 Nabal treated David with contempt (worthless). David was fighting the battles of the LORD (v28) so to treat David with comtempt was just like treating the LORD with contempt and this was punished accordingly.
Perspectives: David seen it as a case ofprotecting some guy's
property so that nothing
went missing (v21), so had
earned the right to ask this
guy Nabal for some provision (v8).
Nabal seen it as a typical case ofjust another servant able to
break away from his master so
why should he help by giving
his bread to men coming from
who knows where (v10-11)?
behavior to David as insulting
(v14), explaining to Nabal's wife
that David and his men had acted
like a protective wall for them
(v16) but that Nabal "is such a
wicked man that no one can talk
to him (v17)."
Abigail acted immediately to rightthe wrong, "Please forgive your
servant's offense (v28)" then went
on to confirm David's calling while
flowing in the word of wisdom to
turn David away from making his
own mistake because he wanted
to kill Nabal and all the males in his
household, which (v22) would be
to avenge himself when already
God said that Vengeance was His,
He would repay (Ro 12:19;
Deu 32:35).
David received Abigail's apology, gifts, and word of wisdom by turning away from wrath while Nabal was at home throwing a keg-party, getting very drunk (v36); his wife waited until morning to tell him what had happened but after his party was over and morning came, the news didn't go over very well and Nabal started having heart trouble, then 10 days later he had a heart attack and died (v37), but since Abigail respected the LORD and the LORD's Beloved (which is a picture of the Lamb and His Wife) she got to become one of David's wives (v40, 42).
