v14 Day after day Saul searched for David, but God did not give David into his hands.

v7 Saul is still so messed up in his thinking that he says, "God has handed David over to me, for David has imprisoned himself by entering a town with gates and bars."

By what reason of imagination was Saul telling himself these lies...?

Truth is, the only one imprisoned by what he himself did is Saul, who spiritually put himself behind invisible gates and bars through disobedience, but we can only see enough to judge what we ourself do (Ro 2:1) so Saul is really projecting his disillusionment with its vain imagination and lack of the mind of Christ (2 Tim 1:7) onto David.  For had Saul really operated in a sound mind he would not have said this or be chasing David around from city to city to murder an innocent man with his spirit of fear that was tormenting his mind by constantly reminding him how he's going to lose his position as king.  Yet it is God who is allowing this evil spirit on Saul to be used to repay Saul for his disobedience, and when God decides a matter there is nothing anyone can do about it.  Thank God that He has a way of turning even our bad for good so it's in this that David can rest, being shaped into more Godly character himself by this very challenging, seemingly unfair story.

Sometimes all you can do is hope for people because there are things that make it hard to believe anything will be different.  All what is left to believe in is faith, hope, and love (1 Cor 13:13).  Sometimes we have to leave them at the "hope" level, or even at the "hope against hope" level (Ro 4:18), for at least we know of hope that "hope does not disappoint us" (Ro 5:5).

David and Saul both entered hope according to the story on their individual lives.  Saul's hope came in the end whenever Samuel told him he would end up on his side.  David's came for he did become king and this stupid chase ended.
