David turns up in Gath where the servants of the king recognize David as being the one they sang/danced about who had slain tens of thousands while Saul only slain thousands. For whatever reason David read something into their words and the way they recognzied him to where his perception showed him that this all meant something unpleasant for him so it made him afraid. Maybe he thought these guys would see David as a threatening warrior toward their own territory, would misjudge his motive for being there in the first place so would want to kill him~ It had to be something like that in order to reduce David into acting like he was crazy in the mind...interesting
He was scratching on the door like a dog, letting saliva drool down his beard.
David's little crazy idea worked because they left him alone. Even if they wouldn't have killed him, to have taken him then place him in Gath as one of their military leaders was obviously not God's plan either so in some situtations we're just going to have to do the best we can with what we have to work with.
