Conflicting Priorities

Jonathan's dad was very important to him and so was David. These 2 relationships were of high priority in Jonathan's life. Normally Saul would confide in Jonathan about everything he wanted to do but not this time because Saul knew Jonathan would want to protect David and Saul still wanted to kill him (v2). Jonathan struggled to believe David who told him of his father's intentions which directly challenged the relational trust between Saul & Jonathan yet Jonathan thought he knew his dad and couldn't believe his dad would do something outside the established boundary of their relationship so this had forced Jonathan to question it while at the same time admit that in his relationship with David there was trust that had established their relationship too so now Jonathan is put in the position where 2 priorities are meeting face to face and he must decide what he will do for no matter what it will cost Jonathan something.
On the surface it looks like David's insinuation is causing disturbance to Jonathan's peace but in reality truth never does this and in fact the fruit of sin had caused Jonathan to be put in this conflicting position of having to choose to do right by priorities... Should he cover for his dad because of being related by blood and blood is thicker than water plus the king needs to look like the responsible good guy? Or should he chose to protect an innocent man by helping David escape because murder is wrong, political or otherwise, and risk losing his relationship with his father? Jonathan chose righteousness. He helped David escape even though his dad word cursed him for it (v30).
Whenever all this went down, Jonathan and David had made a pack (covenant) that Jonathan would agree to help David and David agreed to show unfailing kindness to his family no matter what, even after the LORD cut off all of David's enemies, David still had to show kindness. It was this covenant that helped out Jonathan's son Mephibosheth in the future once David became king (2 Sam 9:1-11).~What we do now makes a difference in the future~
