Saul's attendants were sent to David to present him the offer of becoming the king's son-in-law. Saul's hidden agenda and motives were evil but David had this sincere humility though he was talented and successful. He still took the matter sincerely when being approached with the idea.
v23 But David said, "Do you think it is a small matter to become the king's son-in-law? I'm only a poor man and little known."
David's perception of himself was honest and in humility that wasn't false, David had acted out the LORD's character.
