~Though Saul needed the people to accomplish
his will he didn't really include them in his
vision.

Jonathan was not present so he did not come up under the voice of fear to be following it's voice so had exposed it by saying about the fear style leadership... v29 My father has made trouble for the country. See how my eyes brightened when i tasted a little of this honey. v30 How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter have been greater.
v37-45 Once Saul found out it was his son Jonathan who disobeyed "his" command (unknowingly), the guys under Saul rescued Jonathan from Saul's new death word which wanted the guilty person to die for disobedience. (Very unmerciful considering Jonathan wasn't aware of the command to begin with.) The guys under Saul knew it was Jonathan but had kept silent after Saul asked because Saul's leadership style did not promote true loyalty, fear never does. People can't wait to get away from you and will be looking for the opportunity to leave you once realization comes that you are trying to control them through fear tactics because God originally created us to be compatible with and for peace. Peace is actually what comes more natural to us.
