Learning to discern the Voice : God showed up first as something Samuel already recognized (his mentor's voice).v4 The LORD called Samuel
v5 Samuel ran to Eli, "You called me."
v5 Eli said, "I did not call you."
v6 Again the LORD called, "Samuel!"
v6 Samuel got up & went to Eli, "You called me."
v6 "My son," Eli said, "I did not call."
v7 Samuel did not yet know the LORD. The Word of the LORD
had not yet been revealed to him.
v8 The LORD called Samuel a 3rd time.
v8 Samuel got up & went to Eli, "You called me."
v8 Eli realized the LORD was calling the boy
v9 If He calls say, "Speak, LORD, Your servant is listening."
v10 The LORD came & stood there calling, "Samuel! Samuel!"
v10 Then Samuel said, "Speak, for Your servant is listening."
Once there is differentiation & recognition of being a "servant" of the LORD, not just a child that needs to be spoon fed or a son who wants to inherit everything, but as a servant ready to do the work of the LORD, Samuel could then receive ears to hear (Rev 2:11) the secrets of the LORD (Ps 25:14) as a sheep knowing His Voice without following another (Jn 10:45-5).
