Download | Duration: 00:04:15
v19 Naomi & Ruth arrived in Bethlehem & Naomi is deeply hurting over the loss of her husband, 2 sons, and now other daughter-in-law who took her advice to return to her mother's house.
Naomi was well known. (v19) The whole town was stirred because of them and the woman exclaimed, "Can this be Naomi?" v20 Don't call me Naomi (pleasant)... call me Mara (bitter), because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. v21 I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The LORD has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.
What can be appreciated is how Naomi, even through painfully negative circumstances, had still believed it was only the LORD in charge of her life and that He was the One directing her steps. She really believed He was LORD, fully trusting in Him in this way in spite of the situation that on one hand seemed like He was against her.
A man's heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps. Pro 16:9
Naomi really was hanging on to God through confession and circumstance recognition of what she really felt was going on in her life. She didn't deny feelings-thoughts-emotions or repackage them to avoid sounding like the less than spiritual jerk accusing God of wrongdoing, on the contrary, Naomi believed in God so much she didn't know who else to turn to or give credit to for the good and/or the bad entering her life because she believed in the Sovereignty of God, knowing deep down that bad things happen to good people. Without lying, Naomi took her true feelings, as ugly as they sounded, and brought them out to the surface and spoke them in truth instead of filtering them first through a mask before serving them to people, in consequence, reaping the healing (ch4 v16) as she took the child, laid him in her lap and cared for him. (v17) The woman living there said, "Naomi has a son." His name, "Obed," King David's grandfather. Honest confession played a role in giving back what had seemed forever lost.
