Architecture & Early Slums
New England Architectural (strength-LOOSE the gift of spiritual building) antecedants may be seen in some houses dating back to the 1830's.
1850's Germans & Poles supplanted (weakness - BIND undermining the gospel and scheming) original New England residents and were themselves succeeded since the depression of the 1930's by rural SE Missouri & Arkansas families.
Weakness - BIND rebellion
1840's 2-3 story rowhouses were built for immigrant laborers arriving here in the 1840's-1850's. After Civil War many of these structures fell. Those that remained deterioriated into slums "noxious" by 1870. "Their residents descended to the depths of depravity & crime..." Nicknames such as "Castle Thunder" "Crabber Alley" "Wild Cat Chute" & "People of all ages & races lived in conditions of indescribable filth, promiscuity, & disease." Industries later replaced the slums.

Ashley built his country home on top of one mound, another was used as a reservoir for the 1st city waterworks, and Vauxhall Gardens was built on top of "Big Mound" in the 1820's.
