Just Ask
Blue v29-32 Num Ch 10When you need help just ask for it. Moses 1st tried luring Hobab into staying but it didn't work. Luring is trying to make somebody want what you have although it's not the most humble method because the emphasis doesn't reveal your humility or your real need so you're not really asking for help yet. Bible says ask and you shall receive but a lot of us aren't even asking yet (Jms 4:2).
v29 "Come with us & we will treat YOU well."
All the emphasis is on the other person but you're the one that needs this person but you are acting like you don't, like you're doing them a favor by making this offer. Ironically, what is being offered probably isn't even their need.
v29 ..."for the LORD has promised good things to Israel."
Well good for Israel, but what does that have to do with Hobab? Moses didn't feel confident about being in the desert, he didn't feel like he knew where he was going but did feel like Hobab knew and could be their eyes. It didn't really matter at this point that the LORD promised good things to them, who would be enjoying it when you're running around in circles? Moses needed this guy's help and Moses quickly figured out that luring doesn't work so he went on to humility by admitting his real need. (Remember in last blog that the natural comes first then the spiritual... this is an example... natural behavior tried to get something to work, it failed... humility, which is a manifestation of love, is spiritual behavior, it worked).
Moses admitted to Hobab that they needed him. This feels good when somebody admits to you that they need your help- it's putting the power in your hands & you know they are being vulnerable, that they are trusting you not to crush them, & if you are not evil you will not abuse that by trying to control them with it, instead you will be humble too then do what you can to help.
v31 But Moses said, "Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the desert, and you can be our eyes."
If it's in your power to help, then help. Somewhere there will be a blessing in it.
v32 If you come with us, we will share with you whatever good things the LORD gives us.
This kind of talk is so much easier to receive, it makes you want to help because now you know you are truly needed because the value was put on you and what you had to offer.
